The Centre Pompidou: the place for modern artists

The Center’s story
The Centre national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou is a museum of modern art located in the heart of Paris and opened in 1977. Several types of art can be found there such as plastic arts, books, drawing, music...It was inaugurated on 31 January 1977 and today it welcomes more than 10,000 visits per day. In 2019, the museum had over 100,000 objects.
Years of construction
The architecture of the centre was realised with the help of the Frenchmen, Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers, Gianfranco Franchini and in collaboration with the British engineer Edmund Happold after winning a competition proposed by the French president Georges Pompidou after having refused more than 681 proposed projects.
The centre has undergone several modifications, alterations and works: In 1997, the building was increased in size by 8,000m², making a total of about 45,000m². In 2018-2019, work will be carried out on the museum to improve the thermal insulation and further increase the surface area of the building.
Also, work is planned from 2023 to 2027.
In short, it is a centre in constant evolution!
A unique structure

Museum structure
With its architecture and structure so particular (steel, concrete, glass...), the building looks more like a theme park than a real museum. This was even the original aim, to avoid the structure of a classic museum and to offer something original and colourful. The museum is dedicated to works and artists from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, which is what makes it so special: to highlight modern creations.
The power of Art
This place really shows the power of Art in our time, considering the monthly visits, and the interest of the public. Art influences our way of thinking, allows us to raise awareness of the problems of our world. Museums are therefore perfect places to learn things, to be educated and therefore to better understand our society.
The Pompidou Centre is considered today as one of the most famous and visited monuments in Paris.
